Year 6 - Wild West

Welcome To The Wild West

Summer Is Here

Welcome to the Summer Term, the final term of the year and, for Year 6, their final term at Harrowgate Hill Primary School! We aim to make this a memorable and exciting term, with a variety of activities for you all to take part in, including:

Residential

Year 6 Production of A Midsummer Night's Dream

Post-SATs party

Leaver's Assembly

Leaver's Disco and BBQ ...

to name but a few.

Of course, there is the small matter of SATs (starting on Monday 13th May) to get through, and our curriculum to complete, but even that will have its exciting moments. Follow the journey of Ernest Shackleton in English, get to grips with a Victorian census - what was life like in the local area, 150 years ago? - and classify plants and animals, according to a wide range of different criteria.

What's not to love about the end of Year 6?

The Wild West are loving World Book Day. We have been planning, writing and editing our own books about space - both fiction and non-fiction!

Spring Has Sprung!

Welcome back to the first half of an exciting Spring Term. There are loads of new things to engage with, be entertained by and generally edify everyone!

In English, we are visiting the Amazing Creatures Menagerie and creating information pages full of fun facts, interesting information and stupendous soundbites(?), while in Maths we continue our tour of all things arithmetical and take a trip round Ratio.

Our new Curriculum is throwing out some exciting activities, too. We're looking at Evolution in Science, film soundtracks in Music, a wide range of different artists in Art and, in History, we'll also be trying to decide which historical and significant figures would not look out of place on a British banknote! I can't wait to see how we get on with all of this (and everything else we'll be doing) and I hope you are all as excited as me!

Just a couple of quick reminders ...

1. PE continues to take place on a Tuesday afternoon

2. Homework will be sent home on a Thursday and should be brought back to school by the following Wednesday

3. SATs club takes place on a Monday after school, from 3.30 until 4.30. Even if you haven't already signed up, it's not too late to come along and get some extra practice in (and to help yourself to a cup of juice and a biscuit or two!!).

Yeehaaaaaw!!

Mr Abbott

In DT, we used a Computer Aided Design (CAD) program to create 3-D versions of a navigation multi-tool.

In French, we learned about different sports, and the Olympics, and played a French board game.

And in Science, we used our knowledge of mirrors and how light travels in a straight line to create periscopes.

Howdy, pardners, and welcome to the Wild West - the rootingest, tootingest class in the whole dang school! We're going to have some fun this year (as well as doing a lot of hard work!) and I can't wait to get right on with it!

Talking of hard work, our Autumn Term Topic focusses on the Second World War - its causes and its consequences, the effect it had on the people not just at home but around the world, and its lasting legacy. We read the novel ‘The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas’ in our English lessons, using it to help inform our understanding of what happened in Europe during the war, and to help us improve not only our reading comprehension skills, but also our writing skills. We look at Henry Moore's World War 2 based art and have a go at building an Anderson Shelter, while in Science, we study Electricity and Light and in Music, we take a tour of Swing. There's a lot to do, but it's all great fun!

The Wild West's PE day is Tuesday. Children will need to come dressed in their PE kits (a reminder that our PE kits are black shorts/joggers, house coloured t-shirt, black jacket/jumper and trainers) and they will be led by our Sports coach, Mr Frampton.

We very much look forward to spending this year with you and hope you enjoy it as much as we will enjoy delivering all of our fun and interesting lessons!

See y'all soon,

Mr Abbott
