This week, we've been diving into some fantastic debates about Street Child! The children have been putting themselves in Jim's shoes and considering a tough decision: should Jim have stayed with Grimy Nick or gone back to the workhouse? 🤔
We explored arguments for both sides, looking closely at Jim's choices and weighing up the pros and cons. To sharpen our debating skills, we practised using sentence stems with different openers and causal conjunctions. The class really rose to the challenge and worked brilliantly in teams, presenting their ideas with confidence. 🎤💬
To round off the week, everyone had a go at writing up their arguments. The children's writing showed fantastic progress, with some great use of language and thoughtful points. Well done, Rio Class – you've certainly been working hard! ✍️⭐
Welcome to Rio Class
Hello and welcome to Rio Class! My name is Mr Turnbull, and I’m so excited to be teaching your children this year in Year 5. Year 5 is such an important stage in a child’s learning, and I’m really looking forward to getting to know each of your children as they continue to grow.
This term in English, we’ll be diving into Street Child by Berlie Doherty, which is one of my favourite novels to teach. It gives such an engaging insight into the struggles of children in Victorian London, and I know it will lead to some fascinating discussions. In Maths, we’re starting with addition and subtraction, and we’ll be sharpening our arithmetic skills every Friday. In Geography, we’ll explore what life is like in the Alps—quite a contrast to life here in the UK!
I truly believe that education is a partnership between school and home, and I’m looking forward to working closely with you to make this a successful and enjoyable year for your child. Whether it’s supporting homework, reading together, or just talking about what we’ve been learning in class, your involvement is invaluable. If you ever have any questions, concerns, or even just a quick query, my door is always open.
PE will be held on the designated days, so please ensure your child comes to school dressed in their PE kit. This includes black shorts or joggers, a house-coloured t-shirt, a black jacket or jumper, and trainers—please remember to label all clothing to avoid mix-ups!
Together, I know we’ll make this a fantastic year for Rio Class. I’m really looking forward to seeing all the progress, smiles, and success that this year will bring.
Best regards,
Mr Turnbull
