Year 4 – Sri Lanka

Welcome to Sri Lanka Class!

We are a class of 28 Year 4 children and our teachers are Mrs Sanderson

Please keep looking at our page to see our learning journey as we take on the challenges of Year 4 together!

Our PE day is  - Thursday!

Homework is due in on: Thursday!

In Maths, we have been using manipulatives to help us with our knowledge of place value as well as addition and subtracting! We found it a little more challenging when we had to exchange, but with a little perseverance, we were successful!

Thursday 3rd October 2024

Year 4 welcomed our friends and families into school to watch our Harvest Festival performance. The whole school were invited to donate some food to King's Church Foodbank to support our local community.

Why are rainforests important to us?

Where in the world are tropical rainforests?

Sri Lanka have been learning about biomes, ecosystems and tropics: locating rainforests globally, understanding why they occur there and discovering the features of the Amazon rainforest using maps and photographs.

What is the Amazon rainforest like?

We have been developing an understanding of vegetation belts and exploring further the ‘tropical grasslands’ of the Amazon rainforest. Learning about the four layers of a rainforest; the vegetation and animals that occupy each; and the adaptations of vegetation in a tropical rainforest biome.

Who lives in the rainforest?

We have been learning about indigenous communities in the Amazon rainforest and how they use its resources; how other groups claim rights to the tropical rainforest; identifying changes over time; introducing the concept of deforestation.

How are rainforests changing?

Sri Lanka have been describing why tropical rainforests are important to our Earth; understanding the negative environmental impact humans have on the Amazon rainforest and discussing what can be done to oppose it.

How is our local woodland used?: Data collection

Visiting a local woodland to find out how it is used; practising the data collection skills of questioning, sketching and logging live data.

How is our local woodland used?: Findings

Collating and analysing data to identify how people use the woodland; presenting and discussing findings; suggesting ways to improve fieldwork methodology.

Using electricity

Sri Lanka have explored different examples of electrical appliances and classifying them as mains or battery-powered.

Building circuits

We have been learning how to represent electrical components and circuits and testing if they work or not.

Switching on and off

Exploring how switches work and why they are useful through an electrical circuit game.

Investigating bulb brightness

Our class have been posing testable questions about circuits and investigating how the number of bulbs in a series circuit affects their brightness.

Electrical safety

We used our knowledge from the unit to explain why electrical safety rules are in place.

Drawing: Power Prints

3D pencil drawings

In this lesson we used tone to make an observational line drawing look three dimensional and exploring different gradients of pencil.

Wax resist

Applying an understanding of tone to the technique of hatching; using pattern and contrast when creating a mixed-media drawing based on the collage compositions from last lesson

Power prints

We have been showcasing learning from across the unit by working in groups to create giant prints inspired by their collages and wax-resist drawings.
