Year 5 - Rio

Well that's a wrap.

See you all back in September when we will be

'HOLLYWOOD'

Class of

2023/2024

What an amazingly busy week we have had this week.

Bank Holiday,

e-safety afternoon

trip to Longfield

and our Summer trip to the Life Centre

all culminating in our Red, White and Blue day to celebrate the King's Coronation.... phew!

Be prepared for a barrage of photos as soon as I can get them downloaded.

Life Centre Space Workshop - Learning about the Space Station

Viking Day - actually the pictures don't do the events justice as we were so busy we didn't take as many photos as we could have.

Snow Day

World Book Day

Spring term 2 is here.

We are looking forward to lighter nights, warmer weather and the appearance of all things Spring.

Busy as a Bee must be our motto this term as each week appears to be jam packed as usual.

First we kick off with World Book Day.  Always a tip top calendar event!

Later this term we will have Assessment Week, Viking Day, Well Being Week, Green Week and Spring Day with cake and maypole dancing -  amongst other events - Don't worry we will keep you informed every step of the way.

We have created some preliminary stitch designs for our Viking Weaving projects.

Well what a fabulous half term we are having.

Aspirations week was amazing.  The children learned so much about the world of work - they were astonished at the different jobs that there are out there to do.

We had some really interesting speakers who gave their time to pop in to school either in person or via Zoom to share their passions with the children and really promote their particular areas of expertise.

Our next stop is Safer Internet Day 2023.  A very valuable and important area of learning I am certain you will agree.

Whatever next???

Spring Term 2023

Welcome back to a Happy New Year.

This term we have a multitude of new and exciting topics to cover and new learning to be done.

We will learn all about 'Invaders and Settlers' in our Humanities and Arts Topic.

Who were the Saxons and Vikings and why did they invade and settle in Britain?

Our Art and DT will be to create some weaving in the style of Viking times.  If anyone has any balls of wool which are spare and not needed then we would be really happy for you to donate them.

We are going to study Beowulf by Michel Morpurgo for English and we are reading 'Saxon Boy' as our class text.

In Mathematics we hope to consolidate our formal multiplication and division skills - although we might leave long division for later.

PE continues to be outdoors on Tuesday afternoon (hockey this half term) so a warm plain black track suit will be required.  (black and no logos please - ear rings should be removed or covered at home)

We continue to promote our positive behaviour scheme - Good to be Green.  94% of pupils remained Green in Rio last term.  100% of children managed to access at least one of the half termly treats.  Additionally, Rio achieved 3 KS2 Attendance awards last term and were awarded their own clothes day.  That is a fantastic achievement everybody - well done.

Well... off we go.  Here is to the best term yet!

Stem Week

Autumn Term 2

Halloween flashed by in an instant and we are already thinking beyond Bonfire Night.  Although we had a jolly time singing 'Fireworks' by Katie Perry in singing assembly this week.

We are looking forward to inviting you all to our Open Afternoon later in the month and then the great run up to Christmas... is it too early to say it yet?

Oh,  and we will have loads of fab, fun and interesting learning to do along the way.

Watch this space for our Autumn learning journey.

PE will revert to normal PE in school from the 15th November so children will need to come in to school in full PE kit every Tuesday from that date.  Our PE is outdoors so plain black joggers, House T shirt, Plain black hoodie or jacket and trainers please - no LOGOs, football or Designer labels on show. All school clothes need to be clearly named.   Earrings should be removed either at home or by the pupil in school.  They can cover their own ears in plasters but must do so themselves.  There is however therefore still a risk of injury with this method.

Christmas fun, DT toys and Christmas Fayre

A Warm Welcome To Rio de Janeiro

I would like to welcome you to our Year 5 class page for Rio. My name is Mrs Godfrey and I will be Rio's teacher this year.

I have to say I am very excited for the year to begin as we have so many lovely learning opportunities ahead of us.  The classroom looks beautiful, pencils are sharp and books empty, just waiting for that lovely feeling you get when you write on the very first clean page.  Sooooooo many opportunities ahead and new things to learn.

Our very first adventure will be to start swimming on the second Tuesday of term.  As i said to one of the children today - who was a bit worried because he can not swim - "Just imagine what it will be like when you can swim because that is exactly what swimming lessons are for.  How lucky we are to be able to learn such a fun, valuable and possibly life-saving skill." Needless to say, he agreed with me and is excited to start learning.

Later this half term we will be setting off to Beamish Living Museum.  Let's keep our fingers crossed for a fine, dry day.  Whatever the weather we will have an amazing time and the children will be able to learn some fascinating facts about life in Britain in the distant past.

Well, that's all for now but pop back regularly to see plenty of photos of our events and activities.

Stem Week - Building a bridge

Going Green - We have helped to plant a new hedgerow to help our birds and to make the school grounds even more beautiful.

Children In Need Day

Rio Timetable for Autumn 1 On occasion there may be minor alterations to the timetable due to events etc but this is generally our weekly schedule.
