Home Learning for week beginning Monday 1st June
Good morning Wombats,
Try your very best to complete one activity each day from each section again this week. So one piece of English, reading every day, one phonics or grammar activity each day, one maths activity each day and one Science activity for this week.
English
Task 1
Get a response pen (we use green at school but any colour is fine). Reread the beginning of the story that you wrote last week.
Make the improvements suggested by your grownup and discuss what will come next in your story (look at the plan you made last week to help you).
Task 2
Reread my plan of a new story like Cottonwool Colin.
Bubble wrap Barbara |
|
Characters |
Barbara (beaver) Her family – mother, father and brothers and sisters (all bigger than she is). Grandma |
Beginning Who are the family? Who is protected and why? Where does the character go? |
Barbara is the smallest in her family and wants to explore. Father says it is too dangerous. Grandma says to wrap her in bubble wrap so they do. |
Middle What happens first to put the character in danger? Then, after, next |
Live by the sea so if she falls off cliff, she is safe. Boy kicks thinking she’s a football. Seagull pecks Chased by dog |
End Finally… What happens when the character gets home? How do they feel? What is the result? |
Finally back home and out of breath. Mother worries but she explains everything that happened She is still safe. She is now allowed out in the big wide world. |
Here is the next part of my story following my plan.
At last, she was free and she rolled out to smell the sweet sea air from the windy cliff-top. She felt the happiest she had ever been and so grown up until… A huge gust of wind blew her to the edge and WEEEEEEE, SPLAT! She had toppled over the edge and ended up surrounded by the golden sands of the beach. Luckily, she was safe. Then, she heard footsteps. A young, excited boy came closer to investigate the mystery item he could see, hidden like treasure.
What time connectives have I used?
Here are some more examples of time connectives. Which ones will you use in the next part of your story? Make a note of them in the middle section of your plan.
Now it is your turn to write the middle section of your story, use the words below to help you make interesting vocabulary choices.
Verbs chased rolled toppled dived dodged slalomed hopped hid skipped heard |
Adverbs quickly carefully energetically dangerously speedily unhappily frantically horrifically |
Emotions scared horrified amazed shocked terrified |
Conjunctions because so but when yet |
Once you have finished the middle of your story, reread it and check your own work. Can you spot and correct any of your own mistakes?
Look back at your plan again and tell the ending of your story to a grownup ready for tomorrow.
Task 3
Read back through the beginning and middle of my story, we need to do this to make sure that the ending makes sense and follows on from what I have already written. I am going to use the middle part of my story to link to the ending.
Have a look below at my ending.
Finally, Barbara was home after a difficult day. She breathed a sigh of relief. Her father ran straight up to her, extremely grateful she was safe. She explained to him that everything that could have happened did…
She had been to the beach, flung into the ocean for a swim, pecked at by a seagull and chased away by a dog yet she was still OK.
Dad and the rest of the family were so happy she was unharmed. Barbara felt big and brave like her siblings and grinned showing all of her pearly teeth. From then on, Dad allowed Barbara to go out and explore with her brothers, sisters and friends in the big wide world because he knew she could look after herself… even without being swaddled in bubble wrap.
Can you spot where the middle links to the end? Discuss it with a grownup.
What do you think is successful about my ending?
Are there any ideas that you could use in your writing? (choose two or three ideas that you want to include in your ending like a particular conjunction, a sentence starter, an adverb or some powerful vocabulary and make a note of them on your plan).
Write the end of your story, use conjunctions to extend some of your sentences and make sure you follow the structure of the original story.
When you have finished, use a different coloured pen, read through your story and make any changes to any mistakes that you spot.
Task 4
Read through the whole of your story to check that it makes sense. Put a wiggly line under any parts that you think you can make even better!
Go through the checklist below with your story, make the changes independently to make your story as good as it can be before you read it to a grownup.
Task 5
Create a front cover for the story you have written and write a blurb for the back cover. Remember a blurb is a summary of your story without giving too much away!

Home Learning for week beginning Monday 25th May
Good morning my cute, furry wombats,
I have planted my bean in my garden, I hope it will grow well, I can’t wait till I get some beans on it!
Try your very best to complete one activity each day from each section again this week. So one piece of English, reading every day, one phonics or grammar activity each day, one maths activity each day and two Science activities for this week (one of them is art based).
English
Task 1
Watch the Cottonwool Colin video again if you need to or use the story map you made last week to remind you of the story. Click on the link below.
https://harrowgate-hill-primary-school.primarysite.media/media/cottonwool-colin
Look at the planning template below. Complete it thinking about what each box would contain if this were a plan for Cottonwool Colin.
Title | |
Characters | |
Beginning Who are the family? Who is protected and why? Where does the character go? |
|
Middle What happens first to put the character in danger? Then, after, next |
|
End Finally… What happens when the character gets home? How do they feel? What is the result? |
We are going to invent and plan a new story but our new stories will follow the same pattern but we will be changing some details like type of animal and setting.
Task 2
Have a look at my plan for a new story like Cottonwool Colin but I have changed some details to make my own story.
Title | Bubble wrap Barbara |
She is not allowed out in the big wide world. |
Discuss with a grownup what has been changed. Explain how my new story still follows a very similar story to Cottonwool Colin.
Have a look at this table below. You can use it to help you, if you need to, for ideas about the main character, settings and problems but I’m sure you will have some brilliant ideas of your own to!
Main Animal |
Setting |
Chased by |
Think about how will they be protected? What will there name be? |
Think about what dangers are in this place? |
Think about What other things could happen? ( For example, Tossed about in the waves, owls swoop down, flattened by a boat)
|
Make a planning sheet like the one below and plan the changes you are going to make to your story like the one that I did about Barbara.
Title |
|
Characters |
|
Beginning Who are the family? Who is protected and why? Where does the character go? |
|
Middle What happens first to put the character in danger? Then, after, next |
|
End Finally… What happens when the character gets home? How do they feel? What is the result? |
|
Once your plan is finished, use your plan to talk through the story to yourself to make sure that you are happy with it, add any details to your plan if you need to and then tell your story to a grownup using your plan to help you. How was your plan useful?
Task 3
Read the story of The Gruffalo here.
https://www.slideshare.net/hybo/the-gruffalo-16325928
Read it again and this time write down all the things that were seen, heard and felt by both the mouse and the Gruffalo. What ideas can you take? Add them to your story plan.
Task 4
Get a dice and have a look at the table below, complete the activity that matches the number your dice lands on, make sure you have your plan in front of you.
Tell your partner the names of your characters. |
|
Tell your partner the opening sentence of your story. |
|
Tell your partner three time connectives you will use in the middle of your story. |
|
|
Tell your partner four adjectives to describe the setting. |
Explain what you changed in your story (compared to the original) using the conjunction ‘but’. |
|
Tell your partner the ending to your story using your plan. |
Task 5
Today we are just going to write the beginning of our story. Look at your plan to see which point you need to write up to.
Listen to the original story of Cottonwool Colin again here.
https://harrowgate-hill-primary-school.primarysite.media/media/cottonwool-colin
How did Jeanne Willis, the author, start the story? What ideas from that can you use? Look at her use of alliteration. You can remind yourself of what alliteration is here by watching a video clip if you have forgotten.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zh8c47h
Think of three adjectives of your own using alliteration like Jeanne Willis did (she used big, bold and bouncy)to describe your animals and make a note of that on your plan.
Look at my opening to see how I have used ideas from Cottonwool Colin and my own plan together to write the beginning of my story.
Bubble wrap Barbara
Once there were a family of brave beavers. For beavers, they were happy, huge and hairy except for Barbara because she was the smallest beaver in the bunch. Dad always worried that she would get hurt and she was not allowed to go outside on her own. One day, Grandma said Barbara should be wrapped in bubble wrap to keep her safe so that is what they did. Barbara was wrapped up. Nothing could hurt her. If she fell, she would bouncy straight back up and she would not cut her knee. If she fell in the water, she should float. It was a perfect plan and off she went.
Your turn now! Write the opening of your story, following your plan, use different kinds of sentences, conjunctions, adjectives and expanded noun phrases. What powerful vocabulary can you include?
Reading Challenge
Did you complete all the hexagons on the Reading for Pleasure challenge last week? If not, I’ll leave it on here so you can finish it.

Good morning my little wombats,
How is your bean doing? This is what mine looks like now!
What does yours look like? Post a picture of it on our class blog so we can all see! Thanks Emily, Willow-Rae, Brooke, Robert and Ryan for posting pictures of yours.
Try your very best to complete one activity each day from each section again this week. So one piece of English, reading every day, one phonics or grammar activity each day, one maths activity each day and just one Science activity for the week but remember to look after your beans!
English
Task 1
What do you predict this book will be about? What can you see? What do you think the setting is? What clues are there as to what this book will be about? Who are the characters?
Write two questions that you would like to know the answer to when we read this book.
Task 2
Listen to me read the story here.
https://harrowgate-hill-primary-school.primarysite.media/media/cottonwool-colin
Draw a story map to show the main events of the story. This will be important later.
Task 3
What I liked about the story.
|
What I disliked about the story. |
Questions about the story that I would like answered.
|
2. Write your own blurb for the book (you might need to explain to your grownups what a blurb is!).
Compare it to the blurb on the back of the book (scroll to the bottom of this week’s work to see it when you’ve finished).
Questions to answer
Would you have chosen this book based only on the front cover?
Would you change your mind now you’ve read the blurb?
The purpose of a blurb is to tell us a little bit about what the story is about without giving too much away so that we want to read the book for ourselves.
Task 4
Look at the pictures below. What story could these pictures be about?
Use these pictures to help you summarise this story, tell your summary to a grownup. What information did you decide was important? I challenge you to retell the story in 30 seconds (get a grownup to time you)!
Why could you not fit it all in?
Sometimes we need to summarise a story or an event and when we do this, we just provide the key (most important) information.
Listen to Cotton Wool Colin again and use bullet points to make a note of the main events.
Discuss with a grownup and decide what the five most important events are in the story. You must include these five events in a summary of the story.
Use this to help you.
Sentence starters you could use
One winters day,
After that,
Whilst running,
Scared and cold,
Conjunctions (words that join sentences together) you could use
because so but yet except
Questions to think about when you are writing your summary
Where did the story begin?
How did the story progress?
How was Colin feeling?
How did he escape?
How was the problem resolved?
Task 5
Make up a story with your family!
Start the story by looking at the pictures below.
Each person takes it in turns to say the next sentence in the story (have lots of goes each if there are only a few of you). The story you are telling must have a clear beginning, middle and end, the aim of the game is to create a complete story by the end.
When you have finished, discuss how you knew what to say next and how well the story flowed. What could you have done to make the story better? How did you know what to include to make the story work? Did you use ideas from other stories that you know? You will need the knowledge from this week to continue this work next week J.

Take careful measurements using a ruler accurately to measure how tall the stem is, how long the main root is (if you can) and how long and wide the leaves are. This is important scientific data that needs recording carefully.

Task 1
Look carefully at the picture above
Answer these questions in full sentences, remember your finger spaces, capital letters and full stops, use your common exception word mat to help you with any spellings that you need.
Task 2
Draw a picture of a room in the giant’s house, draw Jack in the room as well so that we can see how big the giant’s things are.
Task 3
Story Starter!
Use the story map that you drew last week to help you complete the story I have started!
Jack had been climbing for most of the morning. Step after slippery step, he had made his way up to the top of the beanstalk. Several times, when the wind picked up, he had feared he might lose his footing and fall to his death. He had dared to look down on one occasion, seeing that his house was the size of an ant far below.
Now that he had finally reached his goal and clambered up to the land of the giants, Jack had no idea what to do next.
‘FEE, FI, FO, FUM…” a voice as loud as a foghorn boomed out from high above him. Jack took a deep breath...
Task 4
‘Big’ and ‘small’ are adjectives to describe the giant and Jack. Can you think of synonyms (words that have the same or similar meaning) for ‘big’ and ‘small’? You could use this thesaurus to help you make a list!
Can you write a sentence to describe Jack and the giant, using some of your synonyms?
Task 5
I asked Mr Roberts to write some sentences about Jack and the beanstalk, but they are not very good! Can you help him by improving them?
1.Jack climbed the beanstalk.
2.The giant stood at the top.
3.Jack was scared.
4.The giant was really big.

Comments on Class Blog Page
Hello my lovelies!,
If someone has commented on a blog post that you have written, you won't be able to see that comment straight away as all posts and comments need to be approved first so it might be a short while before it appears on the page. Keep checking back, it will appear as soon as possible :)
