Year 1 Curriculum Snapshot

Key Stage 1 came together for a Christmas party! We had lots of fun in our classrooms playing Christmas bingo, pass the parcel and just dance before going along to the hall for lots of dancing, singing and more games! We finished off our day with some party snacks.
We all had lots of fun and looked amazing in our party clothes!

We were all superstars and performed our Christingle to an audience! We sang, we danced and we taught everyone about the importance of a Christingle to Christians. We then had the opportunity to make our very own Christingle with an adult to take home.

In DT we have been learning about structures. We followed a brief to create our own windmill. We learnt vocabulary such as turbine, axle and structure whilst researching different types of windmills and the purpose. We then went outside to test and evaluate our windmills to see if they fit the design criteria.

Alongside preparing for our Christingle performance, we have been learning about the Nativity story and thinking about what Christmas means to us. After sequencing the Nativity story, we created our own Nativity puppets and used them to act out the story in groups.

This half term in PE we have been exploring dance. We have created floor shapes and standing shapes using our knowledge and then adding in transitions to move to and from them. We have used what we learnt last half term to help us think of different ways to travel such as hopping, stepping and zig zagging. We made sure to have two points of contact on the floor at any time. We then put our moves into a sequence independently and then progressed to performing them with a partner.

Children in Need

We have been learning all about the four seasons in Science this half term. We have learnt the names of them and the months that fall within the four seasons. We have discussed the types of weather we might see and also the events we might celebrate. We have worked together to create a ‘weather mobile’, each group had a season to work together to represent. We then moved on to talk about what may happen to the tree throughout the seasons, we went for a walk around our school grounds to explore the changes on the trees. We enjoyed creating ‘fingerprint trees’ to represent each season.

Computing introduced us to an online programme called ‘Sketchpad’ (you can access this from home if you wish). We have been learning how use the mouse to help us complete skills such as applying a background, inserting a shape, dragging and moving objects to change their placement or their size and using our skills to create stories and self-portraits!

Art - Make your Mark

In Art, we have been exploring how to make different marks. We have learnt about different types of lines and practised creating them in the style of the artist Bridget Riley. We worked together to create a collective piece of art using chalks and black paper.
Following on from this, we made different lines to music. We made observations of photographs of the sea and thought about the types of lines we could see by looking at the motion of the waves and the sky. We listened to a piece of music called ‘La Mer’ by a composer called Debussy. Whilst we were listening to this, we worked in groups to create different types of lines to represent the sea. When we had finished we added different media in the form of oil pastels, chalks, felt tips, paints and crayons to make our art come to life!

Geography has encouraged us to explore our school grounds. We have been learning a lot about maps and the features of them. We have labelled maps, created our own key and used objects from school to create ‘messy maps’ of our classroom. We have worked collaboratively for a lot of our Geography this half term and been completing a lot of work outside on our school grounds.
