Year 5 - Rio

Rio recently celebrated World Book Day 2025! The children took part in exciting activities, shared their favourite books, and dressed up as their favourite characters. It was a fantastic opportunity to inspire their love of reading, explore new stories, and discuss their favourite authors.

In a previous Space lesson, we continued our exploration of the planets. The children went outside to learn about how the planets orbit around the sun using the Heliocentric model. We then discussed how our model had some flaws, particularly in not including the relative distances between the planets. To improve our understanding, the children researched the planets, discovering fun facts such as how long it takes each planet to orbit the sun, how many moons each planet has, and other interesting scientific details! It was a great session, sparking curiosity and deepening their knowledge about space!

🎄 Rio's Amazing Christmas Creations! 🎄 Today, Rio Class truly shone with creativity and teamwork as we prepared for the school fayre! The children made incredible Christmas craft trees, each uniquely designed and crafted with complete autonomy. It was wonderful to see their individuality reflected in their designs—every tree was a masterpiece! This morning, we also had a blast making winter biscuits. The children created two delicious treats: adorable snowman biscuits and chocolate-oozing Christmas pudding biscuits. The classroom was filled with laughter, festive cheer, and the irresistible aroma of baked goodies. The hard work and effort paid off as our stall completely sold out! A huge well done to all the children for their fantastic creations and to everyone who supported us by purchasing an item. Thank you for making our fayre such a success! 🎅🍪✨

Today, Harriet, Rio’s amazing Junior Road Safety Officer, along with the Junior Road Safety Team, will be distributing a special gift to all KS2 pupils—a safety light! 🎉 These lights, kindly donated by Taylor Wimpey as part of their community engagement with the North Yorkshire team, are perfect for keeping safe during Road Safety Week this November. The lights can be attached to book bags or bike wheels to help you stay visible. A big thank you to Harriet, the Junior Road Safety Team, and Taylor Wimpey for supporting our school and promoting road safety! Stay safe and shine bright! 🌟

🌟 Amazing Sporting Achievements in Rio! 🌟 I just wanted to take a moment to celebrate the incredible sporting achievements of our class! From smashing it in athletics to showing brilliant teamwork in team sports, the children have truly outdone themselves in their recent competitions. A big well done to everyone who took part—you’ve made us all so proud! It’s fantastic to see such determination, effort, and sportsmanship.

🌟 Dementia Friends Session 🌟 Last week, the children took part in a Dementia Friends session, learning about dementia and how to better understand and support those affected. They showed great empathy and engagement—well done, Rio!

This week, Year 5 absolutely smashed it in DT! 🙌 They built some amazing Doodlers aimed at KS1 children, and the results were so much fun. Each child came up with a creative design and put together a circuit to make a wobbly, funky cup that dances around with the motor. 🎨⚡️ It was fantastic to see everyone's ideas come to life.

A huge thank you and well done to everyone for helping us win the attendance award for the first time in two years! 🎉 This is a testament to your commitment and the children's fantastic efforts – what an achievement! 🏆 A special congratulations to Harriet for being selected as our new Junior Road Safety Officer after her amazing entry. We're all so proud of her! 🚦👏 Just a reminder that English and Maths homework has been sent home with each child. Lastly, thank you all for a brilliant half term. I’m a very proud teacher, and I’m grateful for the children’s hard work and your support. Wishing you all a wonderful break! Mr. Turnbull

This week, we've been diving into some fantastic debates about Street Child! The children have been putting themselves in Jim's shoes and considering a tough decision: should Jim have stayed with Grimy Nick or gone back to the workhouse? 🤔

We explored arguments for both sides, looking closely at Jim's choices and weighing up the pros and cons. To sharpen our debating skills, we practised using sentence stems with different openers and causal conjunctions. The class really rose to the challenge and worked brilliantly in teams, presenting their ideas with confidence. 🎤💬

To round off the week, everyone had a go at writing up their arguments. The children's writing showed fantastic progress, with some great use of language and thoughtful points. Well done, Rio Class – you've certainly been working hard! ✍️⭐

Welcome to Rio Class

Hello and welcome to Rio Class! My name is Mr Turnbull, and I’m so excited to be teaching your children this year in Year 5. Year 5 is such an important stage in a child’s learning, and I’m really looking forward to getting to know each of your children as they continue to grow.

This term in English, we’ll be diving into Street Child by Berlie Doherty, which is one of my favourite novels to teach. It gives such an engaging insight into the struggles of children in Victorian London, and I know it will lead to some fascinating discussions. In Maths, we’re starting with addition and subtraction, and we’ll be sharpening our arithmetic skills every Friday. In Geography, we’ll explore what life is like in the Alps—quite a contrast to life here in the UK!

I truly believe that education is a partnership between school and home, and I’m looking forward to working closely with you to make this a successful and enjoyable year for your child. Whether it’s supporting homework, reading together, or just talking about what we’ve been learning in class, your involvement is invaluable. If you ever have any questions, concerns, or even just a quick query, my door is always open.

PE will be held on the designated days, so please ensure your child comes to school dressed in their PE kit. This includes black shorts or joggers, a house-coloured t-shirt, a black jacket or jumper, and trainers—please remember to label all clothing to avoid mix-ups!

Together, I know we’ll make this a fantastic year for Rio Class. I’m really looking forward to seeing all the progress, smiles, and success that this year will bring.

Best regards,
Mr Turnbull
