Year 1 – Platypus

Welcome to Platypus' class page!

I am Mrs Colman and I will be teaching year 1 in Platypus class this year.

We will be learning lots of new and exciting things this year and I am looking forward to being on your year 1 journey with you!

Keep checking back for photos and updates!

PE day is a Monday...              Library is on Wednesday...

Here are a few photos taken from our first week in year 1!

We have settled in well to our new routine and have really impressed Mrs Colman with how amazing and hardworking we are.

Our First Week - You can see us here using manipulatives to support our maths learning, un-jumbling sentences in English by practising our reading and exploring the classroom with some Golden time at the end of a busy week!

RE Christianity - In RE we have been listening to the story of creation and learning about how Christians believe God created the world. They believe that God created something each day. We listened to the story and decided on some actions to support us retelling it.

Library - Today we had our first library visit with Koala class. We talked about the rules of our library and how we should look after the books. We spent some time looking at the different books we can borrow with our friends. We are looking forward to borrowing a library book next week!

Art: Mark Making - This half term we have been exploring making different lines and marks using different media. Here you can see us making marks to represent the sea to music using oil pastels. Our lines and marks sped up and slowed down with the music.

DT: Making a structure - We followed the research, make, evaluate cycle to create windmills as part of our DT. We looked at different types of windmills and learnt about how to make a stable structure. We then tested our windmills to see if they met the design criteria.

Science: Sensitive Bodies - We explored our own bodies, including our senses in Science. We had lots of practical activities to help us with this.

History: How am I making history? - We looked at our own chronology in History. We ordered photos of ourselves on a timeline from when we were a baby to now. We also thought about how things could be different to how we know them now, Mrs Aitken came to speak to us about when she was younger and shared some of her memories. We thought about memories that were special to us and make a time capsule.

Science: Seasonal Changes - In Autumn 2 we began to learn about the four seasons and how the weather can differ between them. We made our very own season mobile to share with the class.

Geography: What is it like here? - We thought about our local area, focusing on our school grounds and completed some map work to help us understand the environment around us.

Computing: Mouse Skills - We used the online programme SketchPad in computing. We learnt different skills using the mouse such as click, drag and drop.

Computing: Algorithms - In Autumn 2 we looked at algorithms and learnt how computers operate using an algorithm. We learnt that if this algorithm wasn't correct, in the right order and clear then it would need debugging before it would work again.

Christingle: We invited our adults in to perform our learning about Christingles to them in the form of songs and activities. They then helped us make our very own Christingle.

Happy new year!
Welcome back. Here are our topics this term...

Science - Everyday Materials

History - How have toys changed?

DT - Textiles: Puppets

Computing - Digital imagery and Online Safety

PSHE - Safety and the Changing Body

Let's look at our learning so far...

Science: Materials - We explored the KS1 outside area to see which different materials we could find and what they were used for. We selected our own materials for a purpose to create our own feely squish toy.

History: Toys: We began looking at our favourite toys and the material they were made from. Mrs Abbott then kindly came in to speak to us about her favourite toys from when she was a child and we began to make comparisons between the two. We borrowed a box of traditional toys from Preston Park Museum so we could explore the artefacts a little closer.

DT: Puppets - We have been exploring different ways to join material so that we can choose the most effective way to make our own puppets.

RE: Judaism - We are learning about Judaism, we explored some objects related to our new topic and then discussed what they were
