Year 1 – Platypus

Welcome to Platypus class

PE day - Wednesday                                     Library - Wednesday

Art - We worked in groups and drew wavy lines to the tune of Debussy 'La Mer' ( the sea). Then we coloured in the shapes we had created using chalk, pastels, wax crayons and pencil crayons.

In gymnastics we explored making different shapes first on the floor and then on small and large apparatus.

In Science in Autumn 1 we started off learning about the different parts of our bodies. We drew round each other and then added labels. Mrs Melling gave us some tricky labels to add on with shoulder, thigh and ankle included which we stuck onto the right place on the picture. It was great fun!

In Science we were learning all about our senses. We tasted some different foods. Lemon was sour, dark chocolate was bitter, crisps were salty and milk chocolate was sweet. Mrs Melling was surprised how well we managed particularly with sucking the lemons!

In Maths we have been learning about addition and subtraction. One of the trickier concepts was finding a missing number. We worked with a partner to find out the missing number of counters in his/her hand.

In spring so far we have enjoyed our new story "Lost in the Toy Museum" and "Toys in Space". We have been exploring numbers to 20, using number lines, practicing our ball control in PE, learning about toys from the past, looking at everyday materials in Science and painting in ART. See some of our photos from our learning below!

Today was E-safety day! We started the day with an assembly telling us about the importance of staying safe online. We went back to our classes and spent the morning learning about how we can stay safe online and what to do when we may see something online that upsets us. We talked about who our trusted adults are and what we would do in certain scenarios. Have a look at some of our E-safety learning from today below!

Today we have been celebrating World Book Day! We started off our day decorating bear ears to use during our ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ re-telling later. We had a whole school assembly which told us more about why we celebrate World Book Day. When we returned to our class we read and then practiced re-telling and performing ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. In the afternoon we created a story board based on our favourite book. After that we made lolly pop stick figures of our favourite characters from the story and used them to role play the story with each other. See pictures from the day below!

In Spring term 2 we have enjoyed looking at new stories “The Lion Inside”, “Traction Man” and “The Snail and the Whale”. In maths, we have been exploring place value, length and height and volume and capacity. We have been practicing ball control in PE, joining skills and puppet making in DT, exploring what the weather is like in the UK in geography, timbre and rhythmic patterns in music, learning about democracy and why rules are important in PSHE and comparing animals in science. This half-term we also experienced a trip to Hardwick Park where we learned all about food chains and woodland habitats.
