Year 2 - Wallabies

Hi!

I'm Mrs Melling and I'm really excited to be joining the year 2 team this year. It was lovely to meet my new class in the Summer term and spend a whole week getting to know them. They worked very hard and I was super impressed with their enthusiasm.

This term our topic is 'Journeys'. See the snapshot below for more information. I will add photographs and information on this class page as the year goes on. Watch out to see what we've been doing!

See here for more details about our curriculum this year!

Remember, our PE day is Tuesday! Please come to school wearing your PE kit on this day!

Sports Day was on Wednesday 21st June. Here are some photos of our events.

Sports Week - Monday 5th June - Friday 9th June. We had lots of fun during sports week but the Colour run was our favourite bit!

Arts Week - Monday 22nd May - Friday 26th May. After SATs week, Wallaby class had a lovely time designing and making clay flowers!

Monday 15th May - Friday 19th May A massive well done to all our amazing Wallabies this week. I am so proud of how well you have all worked on your SATs papers this week and know you have done your best. It's been lovely seeing you all tucking into your special breakfasts and then settling down for your tests. We had a fabulous celebration yesterday playing on the field and then dancing in the disco. Here are the photographs we took.

On Tuesday 25th April we went to Low Barnes Nature Reserve. We had a fabulous time in a beautiful environment, with lovely sunny weather! We did pond dipping, mini-beast hunting and a great nature trail around the lake. Lunch was a picnic in the great outdoors sitting on a tarpaulin. See the photos below!

On Wednesday 19th April we had a visit from Judo Dan. He gave us a taster session using the proper mats. It was great fun!

Thursday 16th March. Our Class Assembly to parents was today and what a great show we put on! Well done to all the Wallabies for their super reading, singing and reciting! I was so proud of you all and so were your grown-ups!

Thursday 2nd March - World Book Day. What an amazing time we had! The day started with Mrs Abbott reading us her favourite book, followed a brilliant assembly led by Alice in Wonderland. We did shared reading with the year 3s and took part in some fun book activities. Well done to all the adults for helping us all look amazing! We listened to

In the first half term we took part in an Aspirations Week. Lots of visitors came into school to talk about their jobs. We spoke to nurses, a you tuber and an online sales business woman. Year 2's theme was 'The Travel Industry'. We learned about the jobs connected with flying abroad. It was great fun pretending to go through passport control, board our flight, listen to the safety talk etc. Wallaby class flew to Tanzania in Africa as we had been learning about it in our Topic lessons.

On Wednesday 14th December, year 2 took part in their Christmas Performance entitled 'Everyone Loves A Baby!' All their hard work paid off and the audiences enjoyed a great show!

Wallaby class were all very excited about their Christmas Performance 'Everyone Loves A Baby!' As part of our English work we wrote letters inviting various members of the school community to come along and watch. We were able to hand deliver our letters to members of staff and year groups. It was great fun!

Our topic this term was 'Journeys' and we learned all about significant people including George Stephenson and Amelia Earhart. To conclude our topic work, we designed and built our own vehicles.

Wellbeing Week was the week beginning Monday 28th November. We had an own clothes day and took part in lots of fun activities, including making a class thumbprint tree, designing a wellbeing poster and bringing in a special item from and talking about why it's special to us. We even took part in a circus skills workshop which involved a carousel of tasks. You can see how much fun we had from the photographs!

During the week beginning 17th October, Harrowgate Hill Primary School took part in a whole school STEM week. We started with an assembly about what STEM actually means (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Then we listened to a story based on the building of the Brooklyn bridge, '21 Elephants and Still Standing' by April Jones Prince. We used this as a starting point and worked in teams to design and make strong bridges. Year 2 used junk modelling materials. It was great fun and Mrs Melling was very impressed with Wallaby class's team work skills!

In Mathematics at the beginning of the term, Mrs Melling's set practised representing numbers using 'Say it, Make it, Draw it, Write it'.

Welcome to Wallaby Class!

Wallaby class enjoyed using atlases at the beginning of the Autumn term to locate Australasia the corridor's continent. They found Australia and talked about facts they had learned in year 1 about that. They also found New Zealand which is our focus for year 2. It was great fun locating Europe where we live and also other places we had visited for holidays.

As part of our learning in Geography, we had to locate the seven different continents of the world. Wallaby class worked in groups to make their own balloon globes. They coloured and stuck the seven continents onto the balloons as accurately as possible.

On Wednesday 21st September, year 2 visited Locomotion railway museum in Shildon. They all had a fabulous day and learned lots about George Stephenson and his famous engine Locomotion 1 which travelled from Stockton to Darlington. as the very first passenger engine.
