Phonics/ Reading - Read Write Inc

At Harrowgate Hill Primary School, we follow Read, Write Inc. Phonics which is a DfE validated systematic, synthetic phonics programme with a whole school approach to early reading and writing. It teaches children to read accurately, fluently and with understanding to spell and write their own compositions. The scheme has reading materials and books which are correctly matched to the sounds children are taught so that they always have a reading book which is suitable for their phonic development. When children reach the end of the grey reading books they move onto Accelerated Reader.

Who is it for?

Read, Write Inc. is for children learning to read in Reception, Years 1 and 2 and for children in Years 3 and 4 who have not completed the Read, Write Inc phonics programme. It is also suitable for children who still need help with phonics in older year groups.

How are children taught?

Children work in a progress group each day. This means they learn at their 'challenge' every day. Reception children build up longer sessions throughout the year.

Our Reading Leads assess children's phonic knowledge before they start the programme and then every half term. Regrouping the children maximises their progress and allows teachers to provide extra practice for some and whisks others through the programme.
