Science Experiment: What happens to biscuits in different substances?

You will need:

  • Small gingerbread biscuits (or any biscuit)
  • Cooking oil
  • Vinegar
  • Water
  • Milk
  • A timer
  • Tray
  • Measuring Cylinder

For this experiment you are going to put a biscuit in each substance and see what happens and how long the changes take.

Before the experiment, ask your child:

How do you think the biscuit will change in the oil/vinegar/milk/water?

Do you think the biscuit will get bigger or smaller?

Do you think the biscuit will change colour?

What else might happen?

Method:

  1. Place the biscuits in separate bowls or trays.
  2. Measure the same amount of each substance and pour it over the biscuit.
  3. Start the timer.
  4. Make observations about what is happening to the biscuit every 10 minutes and record it on some paper.

After the experiment:

Talk to your child about…

Which substance made the biscuit change the most?

Which substance made the biscuit change the least?
