Information for Parents
Up until recently, we had been using Letters and Sounds to support our teaching of phonics to children at Harrowgate Hill Primary School. The Department for Education published guidance in 2021, stating that Letters and Sounds was no longer a validated phonics scheme. Therefore, we decided to change to a scheme called Read, Write Inc.
Read, Write Inc. is a DfE validated systematic synthetic phonics programme. Your child will learn to read in a very simple way.
He or she will learn to:
1. Read letters by their ‘sounds’
2. Blend these sounds into words
3. Read the words in a story.
Children are assessed every half term by their teacher. This way, they work their way through the programme quickly as they progress through the sets of sounds and stories linked to the sounds they are learning, when they are ready.
